How to connect an iPod Touch to Wi-Fi

iTunes Chart - Updated DailyFree iTunes Every Week

So I had planned to a lengthy, step by step guide on how to set up your iPod Touch to use Wi-Fi Internet. I have a wireless (wi-fi) router in my home, called 'BT Home Hub', that was supplied with my BT Broadband account. So I opened notepad and got ready to type out the steps for setting it up.

I grabbed my iPod Touch and got ready to tap the Safari icon (internet browser)... Right... here goes... "BT Home Hub XXX found"... "Enter Password".

I entered the 'Wireless Key' found/printed on the back of the BT Home Hub. Done! My iPod Touch connected to the Internet in less than 30 seconds. NOTE: Be sure to enter the correct wireless key. Some BT Home Hub boxes also have a key for BT Fusion which won't connect you to anything, but instead give you a 'can't connect to server' error message whenever you try to do internet stuff on your iPod Touch.

Safari fired up and I visited a few web sites on my iPod Touch. Looks great, you just double tap the page to zoom in for a better view.

Then I fired up the Wi-Fi iTunes store by selecting the 'iTunes' icon. By now I'm stood in my garden. Making a purchase was easy. The Wi-Fi verson of iTunes is obviously much skinnier than the desk top version, and at present you can only purchase music and NOT video, podcasts, audiobooks or TV shows. I'll cover the Wi-Fi iTunes Store indepth sometime tomorrow.

It's gone 1:am already! I'm done for tonight. Tomorrow I plan to cover a few things including:

  • The Wi-Fi iTunes Store.
  • How to connect your iPod Touch to Wi-Fi when you're away fom home.
  • My thoughts on the limitations of a 16GB iPod Touch.

Incidently, anyone taking the time to look through my dining room window, with a pair of binoculars, to note the 'Wireless Key' on the back of my BT Home Hub, is welcome to sit in my garden and use my wi-fi connection - Light refreshments are available from the kitchen, but you have to make them yourself. Bring Jammy Dodgers!

If you experience problems in connecting your iPod Touch to Wi-FI, the best place to start looking for a solution is the iPod Touch Support Discussions.
