Earlier this week, Brent over at Soundcrank.com gave me the heads up on their snappy little plug-in for iTunes. I've been having a play around with it and I like it, specifically I really like the 'My Music' function, but more on that below. The iTunes plug-in allows you to automatically add album artwork and lyrics to the songs in your iTunes library. You also get a 'My Music' page on Soundcrank.com where you can share information about your musical tastes. Now I have to confess that I'm always a little nervous about sharing my muscial tastes with others, especially with people I know. They'd rip the shit outta of me in the pub if they knew what I really listened to :) - anyway I digress. So for me the neat thing about the 'My Music' page isn't that I can share my dubious musical tastes with others, no the neat thing is my friends can share THEIR musical tastes with me. It's a really great way of exposing yourself to new music. Now the reason it's taken me 4 days to get this post up is that I decided to put it to the test. I got a good friend of middling years and my 14 year old son to sign up to Soundrank and grab the iTunes plug-in. It worked great, and the ability to remove friends was equally appreciated after I listened to just one or two of the songs on my sons page. Did I teach the boy nothing? I got in touch with the lads from Soundcrank, just to let them know I liked it (well it's nice to get feedback) and I spoke with Ben Hodson, co-founder of Soundcrank. We got into a conversation about tapes and CD's, "We lost something switching from tapes and CDs to digital only formats. We can't go to the CD and get the information we want about an album or song," said Ben. "The iTunes plug-in is a step forward in the restoration of that information." Agreed. Also, found myself offering them free advertising on the doipod.com - Dammit, I'll never make any money if I keep giving it away. Seriously though. A great idea, well executed, I recommend giving it a try with a friend. To download the plug-in and create your profile please visit Soundcrank.com. If you post a comment below when you're done I may give you my profile details so you too can experience my ropey musical tastes. TrackBacks & Pings
